Software deployment and configuration management

  • Redistribution servers groups : A real feature or a glue to fix a conceptual lack. The true concept of software deployments in ocs (latencies and data caching).

 Puppet As a Tool
 The vast majority of Puppet's internals could be reused by other projects, 
 but it was written as a comprehensive configuration management tool, 
 although with close attention to keep the different pieces decoupled. 
 Puppet does everything possible to enable you to use it however you like, 
 but it has its own defaults that it will prefer.

 Stand Alone
 While Puppet is meant to be used client/server, it ships with a stand-alone puppet interpreter. 
 This can be used to run simple stand-alone Puppet scripts, or you can use it like Cfengine, 
 where you pull all of the configurations down and then compile them locally. 
 It's also very useful for initializing your Puppet server, since you can start it with --use-nodes 
 to have it use the node definitions; you can create a Puppet configuration that will configure the 
 server entirely, and then use Puppet to configure itself. Mmm, self-reference.[...]

General architecture

  • Agents and servers 
 Agents send XML, server manage the data and has the ability of giving data in XML. Why an application should handle directly or not the agent XML flaw ?  What does it imply ? (In the genral way we go : we provide a default server instead of the only server)
 Proposal: SNMP query support (get informations and discovery equipements). From the agent or from the server side ? From ipdiscover ?
 Proposal: Use Ocs Agent to retrieve clients files - A new capacity.
  • Inventory 
 Mobile devices management - Where are we ?
 What are the main lacks today ?
 Gathering the usb and pci ids and add a dictionary in the server side
 Proposal: Virtualisation, the way to go?
 Proposal: Give a clean XML list of the user with their privileges.
